We had the incredible opportunity to interview Decadon at Decadence Arizona. Decadon grew up with a love for music and an extraordinary talent to produce.
When did you realize you wanted to music your permanent career?
Ever since I was a kid I could always remember my parents playing music around the house so it was that early when I decided that music was gonna play a very important part in my life. Around age six or seven, my parents started taking me to concerts and from then on I was set to be a musician.
How has music impacted your life? Either that be professional or personal?
Music has allowed me to live a life that I dreamed about my entire upbringing. I remember taking career placement tests in school (as early as 3rd grade) and always being confused as to why “Musician” wasn’t ever listed as a real career option when we got older. I was always told that it was not a realistic career choice. That always bugged me, as I did not see myself fitting in anywhere else in the field of options, especially placing myself somewhere where I would be as happy/motivated as I would be in the field of music. So it is safe to say that music has guided my life for a long time, and it has led me to where I am now.
Where do you pull your inspiration from when creating a new track?
Everywhere. It could be a track that is primarily written to reflect the mood I was in that day. It could be a track that is inspired by a song I heard that day, a movie I saw recently, or something even as variable as the weather. So many things play in to what kind of a song comes out of my head, and into the real world.
How long does the process usually take to create, polish and release a new track?
Now this is a very difficult question to answer because it is never the same. I have written songs that have been completed in as little as one day and released the next (Hey Bud). I have also worked on projects that were in the “almost completed” category for over a year and then not released for many more months even when it was considered “done” just because I wasn’t ready for it to be out (John Mayer Remix). It’s really hard to say because each project is it’s own beast.
How do the holidays affect your touring?
I always feel like I am busiest show-wise around the holidays. It’s a time meant to be spent with loved ones so being away working can be tough. But luckily I had my parents and sister out for Decadence to bring in the new year with me.
When you’re home, how do you spend your free time?
Writing. Writing. Writing. It seems like even my “free time” generally consists of writing at least a little music each day. But on days where it is just not flowing, I tend to like drawing/painting, hanging with my friends/cats, partaking in some locally sourced greenery, and working on my hobby of collecting vintage toys/comics and autographs.
Do you have any New Year’s resolution for 2020?
I want to spread my music and art as far as I possibly can, while continuing to work at being the best human being I can be. I want to have strong relationships in my life with the people who mean the most to me, while building a larger family of amazing people around the globe who listen to my music.
What can we expect from Decadon in 2020? New music, projects?
A bunch of new music and an evolving live show. Gonna be playing more shows than ever before, and releasing content multiple times a month to keep the amazing family we have built on their toes. Its about to be a year I’m never going to forget, I can feel it.
Thank you so much for having me for this interview. I appreciate you all so much!
