Just over a week ago Phoenix Lights Music Festival opened their gates to thousands of concert goers in Chandler, AZ. Right off the bat the temperatures were in the mid 90’s, slightly above average for early April, and stayed steady all weekend. Starting noon on Saturday the festival grounds began filling with people off all ages and continued to grow until early evening when the place really filled out for acts such as Joyryde, Minnesota, GTA, Sevenlions, Gucci Mane, Martin Garrix, and many more featured on four different stages. The whole weekend had electronic and hiphop music spread across the genres with everything from House, Trance, Dubstep, Trap, Chill wave, Bigroom, Riddim, and many sub genres you could mention. We were taken back by Joyryde’s performance and his ability to work a crowd and make them loose themselves. Minnesota come in heavy afterwards with some grimy heady sounding bass music that was ready to bring festival attendees home to the mothership. When Sevenlions hit the stage you could visibly see the crowd moving from all directions in closer to him. He brought out some of the most melodic and loving music and visuals for the entire weekend, while still being able to drop something that could start a riot. Gucci Mane came out in his casual style and played some of his hits like I Get The Bag, Bricks, Lemonade, and about 15-20 more absolute bangers. Martin Garrix brought the entire crowd together and the end of the first night for what was just a straight up feel good blast of his style of house music melting hearts everywhere. When Sunday rolled around this festival filled right back up, possibly quicker then the day before, and we have to give it to these fans, they looked as ready to go hard as they did day one! Some of our favorite sets on Sunday had to be Metro Boomin’, Boombox Cartel, Zomboy, Diplo, and Travis Scott. Young Metro Boomin’ took us on a ride his entire set though his highly acclaimed discography, old to new and everything in between. It was what we will call a set of timeless hiphop bangers on full force. Boombox Cartel killed it like that have been since we first saw them in Minneapolis in front of a crowd of maybe 50 poeple.  Times has been treating the duo quite well in some respects, as all they do is get bigger and bigger while maintaining their sound and dropping straight fire. However, some may notice only one member (Americo Garcia) tours, thats due to the other half (Jorge Medina) of Boombox Cartel being unable to secure a visa back into the USA. by the time Zomboy hit the stage you could feel the grime in the air growing. He threw down probably the hardest and grimiest dubstep set of the weekend, it was surely enough to melt a face or two off. Diplo hit the stage afterwards bringing along his massive catalog of music between his solo work, Major Laser, Jack U, and beyond. Diplo plays what is probably the most diverse set out there because of his casual ability to just mix whatever he feels like together, and always make it work! Closing out night two, and the festival weekend, was Travis Scott. Right out of the gates he come out with some much energy. This man can move people with the power of his voice in ways many wish they could. Travis came to party, he made it very clear, and he wanted everyone there to party with him. and that we did. As far as seeing live rap music Travis Scott blew us away because he looked as if he just couldn’t give anything less then 100%. The whole experience at Phoenix Lights 2018 was nothing but possitive, electric, and charismatic from the performers, staff, and most importantly everyone in attendance!
